Ecommerce Metrics

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

The percentage of people who click on a link or ad after seeing it, calculated as clicks divided by impressions.

What Is Click-Through Rate?

Click-through rate (CTR) measures how often people who see an ad, email, or listing click on it. It is expressed as a percentage: (clicks / impressions) × 100. A Google Shopping ad receiving 10 clicks from 1,000 impressions has a 1% CTR.

CTR is a fundamental performance indicator across paid advertising, email marketing, organic search, and social media. A higher CTR means the creative or copy is resonating with the audience; a low CTR indicates a disconnect between what is shown and what the audience finds compelling.

CTR and Product Images

For paid product listings (Google Shopping, Amazon Sponsored Products, Meta Dynamic Product Ads), the product image is the dominant variable affecting CTR. High-quality images that show the product clearly and attractively against a clean background consistently outperform lower-quality images by wide margins.

AI-generated lifestyle images used as primary product images in shopping ads have been shown to increase CTR by 15–40% compared to plain white-background packshots in some categories - because they provide more visual information and create stronger visual differentiation in the feed.

Benchmarks by Channel

  • Google Search average CTR: 3–5% (varies widely by position and query)
  • Google Shopping average CTR: 0.5–2%
  • Email marketing average CTR: 2–5% (varies by industry)
  • Facebook/Instagram ad average CTR: 0.5–1.5%
  • TikTok ad average CTR: 1–2%

Real-World Example

A pet food brand tests two product image variants in their Google Shopping campaign: a standard white-background packshot and an AI-generated lifestyle image showing the product in a kitchen setting with a dog. The lifestyle image achieves a 1.8% CTR versus 0.9% for the packshot - double the click-through rate, reducing CPC effectively by 50% while maintaining the same overall ROAS.
